Department of Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering at WHOI


The Department of Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering is a unique collection of scientists, engineers, and technical support personnel who are trained and experienced in virtually all branches of engineering and ocean instrumentation. Numbering over 100 individuals, the department conducts research in ocean acoustics, measurements, fluid mechanisms, moorings, structures, signal processing, data acquisition, video engineering, arctic acoustics, seismology, tomography, and information processing. The Department has a variety of computing and instrumentation facilities, shops, laboratories, and design groups. It also conducts a graduate education program in ocean engineering, with degrees awarded through the institution's joint graduate education program with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering's varied talent and facilities are a vital resource and provide a strong support base for the activities of the other science departments at Woods Hole.
